Like a still from a film, the large-format painting shows a young woman emerging from the water of a lake. Drops and rivulets – painted in perfect transparency – run across her face. The head is lowered slightly, the full lips are tense: the woman looks aggressive; ready to defend. Because she is vulnerable, as the wound below her collarbone confirms.

In Christian art many paintings treat the subject of Susanna, who is being watched by two lecherous old men while taking a bath. The pictures mostly show the fear of Susanna, confronted by the attacks of the men.

Philipp Weber goes the extra mile: In his painting the woman is really hurt, her lesions are shown in blood red. However, more than her body was injured, there is a sense of violation; the disturbance of her innermost being and – not least – her soul.
